For Parents

Success Requires Teamwork!!!

(Mrs. Behrends * Students * Parents)

Students' Basic Needs:

· Help your child get a good night's rest every night.

· Help your child eat nutritious meals every day and encourage exercise.

· Help your child bathe, brush his/her teeth and wear clean clothes every day.

At Home:

· When papers, homework or your child's binder comes home, go over them with your child.

· Talk to your child about school and other daily events--every day.

· Monitor TV programs.  Turn off the TV during mealtime to encourage conversation.

· Take an active interest in your child's homework.

· Have realistic expectations for your child.

· Encourage your child to learn from mistakes--yours and his/hers.

· Allow your child to express feelings to you and try to put yourself in your child's place.

Homework:

· Check and sign your child's binder and BEAR reading log every night.

· Ask your child to tell you about the work as he/she shows you school papers.

· Do not expect your child's work to be perfect. Making errors is part of learning.

· Allow your child to have some free time before sitting down to do homework.  After a day of school, most students need an opportunity to expend energy.

· Homework is intended as independent work for students.  Encourage your child to complete the assignment independently.  Students will always have the opportunity to work on assignments before they take it home as homework.

· Give your child a verbal pat on the back.  For example, "I'm proud of you!", You figured it all out!", "I knew you could work this out all by yourself!"

· By working together, you can foster a sense of responsibility in your child toward homework!

Study Habits and Organization:

· Provide a well-lit, quiet area for your child to study and finish homework.

· Have a dictionary and other resource materials available and talk to your child about how and when to use them.

· Make sure your child has all the supplies needed at home and school to complete projects.

· Give your child specific duties to perform on a regular basis at home.

· Give your child a special place (box, bag, etc.) to keep items he or she must take to school each morning.  This ends last minute searching for library books, papers, keys, etc., all of which can cause your child to be late for school.

· Discuss your weekly schedule so you and your child can plan for study time.
